Amsterdam Noord is the district on the other bank. From the back of Centraal Station a free ferry crosses the IJ in four minutes, the metro does it underground in three, and on the far side the city changes shape: wide water, old shipyards, and hotel rooms with a view that guests in the centre never get. The district in plain terms
Noord runs along the north shore of the IJ from the Buiksloterweg ferry landing eastwards to the dike villages of Nieuwendam and Durgerdam, and westwards to the NDSM wharf. The film museum sits right at the water by the ferry, a white building you cannot miss from the station side, and behind it Overhoeks is new towers on new streets. Further west, the NDSM shipyard has become a warehouse district of studios, a weekend flea market and open-air terraces on the old slipway. North of all that lie the Noorderpark and the Nieuwendammerdijk with its painted timber houses.
Where the hotels are
Three groups. The waterfront around the ferry landing and Overhoeks holds the newer hotels, with tall rooms, long views back across the IJ and lobbies that fill with people carrying cameras. NDSM has a second, more industrial set, hotels made from cranes, halls and moored vessels, reached by their own ferry. The third sits inland at the top of the district, near Noord metro station and the ring road, practical addresses for guests who arrived by car and mean to leave the same way.
All three are straightforward. Reception on this side of the water sees more bicycles and more luggage than the canal belt does, and a well dressed visitor stepping out of a lift attracts less attention than the view does.
Arrival times you can plan around
Seventy-five minutes is the working figure, and the extra quarter of an hour is the water. The Buiksloterweg ferry runs all night and takes four minutes, but it leaves when it leaves, and a companion who misses one waits for the next. The NDSM ferry is a longer crossing on a thinner timetable after midnight. The metro removes all of that for the waterfront and Noorderpark addresses, three stops from Centraal. By car it is the IJ tunnel or the ring, quick at eleven at night and slow at six in the evening.

Evenings in Noord start with the view and are shaped by it. A drink on a terrace with the IJ in front of you while the light goes, dinner in one of the converted industrial halls, then the ferry there and back for its own sake. NDSM after dark has music, a slipway crowded with people in summer, and a quieter stretch of quay at the end of it.

Next stops on the map
Amsterdam Centrum is four minutes by ferry from the Buiksloterweg landing, straight into the back of Centraal Station. The Jordaan is a short walk from that same station along the Haarlemmerdijk side. Amsterdam Oost lies across the water to the south east and is best reached through Centraal by tram. For the airport, Noord station to Schiphol is a single change at Zuid from the metro onto a train.
