The district in plain terms
Start at the Plantage, the wide green quarter east of the Nieuwmarkt, with the zoo along the Plantage Kerklaan, the botanical garden by the canal, and the bridges over to the Weesperzijde. South of it the Wibautstraat runs straight down to Amstel station, a corridor of former office towers. East of it the Oosterpark opens out, then the Dappermarkt, then the Javastraat and the terraces of the Indische Buurt. North, along the IJ, are the Eastern Docklands: Java-eiland, KNSM-eiland, the passenger terminal and the concert hall on the Piet Heinkade.
Where the hotels are
Four clusters, spread out. The Wibautstraat and Oosterpark corridor has the largest, modern towers and converted offices with big lobbies and bars that stay busy. The Plantage has smaller, older houses on tree-lined streets. The Eastern Docklands have waterside hotels near the passenger terminal and along the Piet Heinkade, a short tram ride from Centraal. Around Amstel station and the river you find business hotels with river views and easy road access.
Each is a different kind of building and the same kind of arrival. Your companion gives your name only when reception asks for it, and the lift takes her the rest of the way.
Arrival times you can plan around
Sixty minutes holds across Oost, with one caveat about the distances. The district is wide, and the Docklands and Amstel station are a real tram ride apart. Trams along the Plantage Middenlaan and the Linnaeusstraat, tram 26 along the Piet Heinkade, the metro under the Wibautstraat with stops at Weesperplein and Wibautstraat, and the trains at Amstel station cover it well between them. By road, the Wibautstraat and the Piet Heinkade move freely outside the evening peak, and the Docklands have parking, which the canal belt does not.
Tell the desk which part of Oost you are in. The Plantage and the Docklands are ten minutes apart by tram but a good deal further by taxi, and a quoted window is only as good as the address it was built on.
How an evening here tends to run
Oost evenings are informal and a little later than the centre's. A drink on the Javastraat or the Beukenplein, dinner in one of the small kitchens around the Oosterpark, then a walk through the park itself or along the Amstel from the Weesperzijde, where the water is wide and the only traffic is rowing boats. The Docklands are a different mood, a concert on the Piet Heinkade and a drink facing the water afterwards, with the wind coming off the IJ.

Amsterdam Centrum begins at the western edge of the Plantage, a ten minute walk from the zoo to the Nieuwmarkt. De Pijp is across the Amstel, ten minutes by tram from the Weesperplein. Amsterdam Noord is visible across the water from the Docklands and reached through Centraal. From Amstel station direct trains reach Schiphol without a change, and Utrecht in about twenty minutes, each with its own notice period.
