The district in plain terms
West is broad. South of that, the Kinkerstraat and the De Clercqstraat cut through the Kinkerbuurt, with De Hallen, the old tram depot, at the centre of it. Further south again the Overtoom runs parallel to the Vondelpark, whose western half is in this district. Sloterdijk, in the north west corner, is a railway junction with a skyline.

Arrival times you can plan around
Inside the ring, sixty minutes and comfortably so. Trams cross the district in every direction, the Kinkerstraat is ten minutes from the Leidseplein, and the Westerpark is a short walk from the Haarlemmerdijk. Sloterdijk is different: a quarter of an hour further by tram or train, on the far side of the ring, so the desk quotes seventy-five minutes there. In the evening peak the Haarlemmerweg and the Overtoom both slow down, and a bicycle beats a taxi on either.

West does not do formal, and it does not need to. Drinks at the food hall or on the Bellamyplein while the market clears, dinner in a former gasworks building, a film at the depot cinema if the evening wants a middle, then a walk through the Westerpark, which is lit, open late and full of Amsterdammers walking dogs at eleven at night. The music venues in the Westergas run later still for anyone who wants them.

Two stations on the airport line
West is the district with the shortest rail link to the airport. Direct trains from Schiphol reach Amsterdam Lelylaan in about eight minutes and Sloterdijk in roughly twelve, so a guest landing at the gates can be in a Sloterdijk room inside half an hour of collecting a bag. For the Kinkerbuurt, the Westerpark or the Overtoom, take a tram from Lelylaan or Sloterdijk, or come in through Centraal and ride out along the Rozengracht. A taxi from the airport usually takes twenty to thirty minutes.
