The city in plain terms
The Binnenhof and the Hofvijver sit at the centre, parliament buildings reflected in a rectangle of water, with the Mauritshuis on one corner holding a collection far better than its size suggests. The Lange Voorhout is the grand avenue beside it, and the Noordeinde runs up past the working palace towards the antique shops. Further out you have the Peace Palace and the World Forum conference district. Then Scheveningen, five kilometres north west, with a pier, a long boulevard and a genuine working beach.
Travel and the extra notice
Direct Intercity trains run from Amsterdam Centraal to Den Haag Centraal in about fifty minutes, several times an hour, with Hollands Spoor a few minutes earlier on some services. From Schiphol it is roughly half an hour. By road the A4 takes around an hour when it is behaving and rather more when it is not.
So two hours is the realistic figure from message to arrival, and three between four and seven in the evening. Scheveningen adds fifteen to twenty minutes on top of whatever the city centre would take, more on a hot summer weekend when the whole region drives to the beach at once.
Where the hotels are
Three groups. Around Den Haag Centraal and the World Forum you find the business and conference hotels, large, efficient, busy with delegations. The Voorhout and Noordeinde side has the smaller and grander addresses, old buildings on quiet streets, the sort with a doorman who has worked there for twenty years. Scheveningen has the seafront hotels, with the boulevard on one side and dunes behind.
The conference hotels are the simplest for a discreet arrival, because a building full of delegates is a building where nobody is memorable. Your companion gives your name at the desk if it is requested, and nothing further.
How an evening here tends to run
Dinner is usually the centre of it. The Denneweg and the streets around the Voorhout carry most of the good tables, and they run later than the rest of the city. If you are staying at the coast the pattern changes, an early walk on the boulevard while the light goes, dinner facing the water, and a quiet return. Den Haag closes earlier than Amsterdam, which most guests find is an improvement rather than a limitation.

Next stops on the map
Rotterdam is twenty five minutes away by train and completely different in character. Schiphol is about half an hour on a direct service, which makes a combined trip straightforward. Amsterdam Centrum is fifty minutes by rail, and Utrecht around forty, each with its own notice period.
