Escorts in Zuidas

Zuidas is the glass part of Amsterdam. A business district of towers along the A10 ring, built around Amsterdam Zuid station, with the RAI convention halls at one end, the Beatrixpark in the middle and the university campus at the other. It is where the largest new hotels in the city have gone, and where a guest is most likely to be here for a meeting and least likely to have seen a canal. Every name on the board travels to Zuidas, and the seven who live in Oud-Zuid are next door.

Status for Zuidas is sixty minutes, and it is the easiest sixty minutes on the map to keep. The fare is €180 for the first hour, with longer formats on request, and the rates page carries the full position.

02 / Detail

The district in plain terms

The Gustav Mahlerlaan is the spine, running from the Amstelveenseweg to the Beethovenstraat with the station and the Mahlerplein in the middle and the World Trade Center beside them. The towers are offices by day and mostly dark by nine, which is when the hotel bars come into their own. The Beatrixpark, just to the north east, is small, formal and genuinely pleasant. Beyond it the RAI sits on the Europaplein with its own station, and beyond that De Pijp begins. South of the ring, Buitenveldert is low rise and residential. West, past the campus, the Amsterdamse Bos is a real forest.

Where the hotels are

Three groups. The station cluster on and around the Mahlerplein and the Gustav Mahlerlaan holds the tall ones, hundreds of rooms each, lobbies designed for check-in at midnight and check-out at six. The RAI group sits on the Europaplein and along the Scheldestraat, busiest during trade fairs and quiet the week after. The third is scattered along the Amstelveenseweg and into Buitenveldert, apartment hotels and longer stay addresses for guests here for a month rather than a night.

Nothing in the district is easier than a quiet arrival. Business hotels run on business rhythms, and a companion in a good coat crossing a lobby full of delegates at eleven is exactly as noticeable as they are.

04 / Schedule

Arrival times you can plan around

One hour, usually met with ten minutes to spare. The metro from the centre reaches Zuid in a dozen minutes, trams come down the Beethovenstraat and the Amstelveenseweg, and by road the ring is right there, with car parks under the towers. From Oud-Zuid, where seven companions live, it is a short tram ride or a fifteen minute walk.

The one thing to watch is the RAI calendar. In a trade fair week the hotels fill, the taxi rank queues, and the desk will quote a slightly wider window and tell you why. Book earlier in the day during those weeks and the choice on the board stays wide.

05 / Concourse

How an evening here tends to run

Zuidas evenings are efficient. A drink in a hotel bar with a view over the ring, dinner on the Gershwinplein or the Zuidplein where the restaurants are aimed at the towers and priced for them, or a ten minute tram to the Beethovenstraat for something with tablecloths. A walk through the Beatrixpark takes a quarter of an hour and resets a day of meetings. Most bookings here end in the hotel, and early, because something starts at eight the next morning.

Samanta reads a room like this in a minute and is composed company in a hotel bar with a view, Milena is direct, polished and at ease among suits, and Margo brings the calm that a fourteen hour day wants at the end of it.

Next stops on the map

Oud-Zuid is immediately north, across the Stadionweg, with the Beethovenstraat running between them. De Pijp begins past the RAI, one tram stop from the Europaplein. Amsterdam Centrum is a dozen minutes by metro from Zuid station to Centraal. Amsterdam West is a tram ride up the Amstelveenseweg. The airport at Schiphol is an eight minute train from Amsterdam Zuid, though the airport hotels still carry their own ninety minute notice.
