The district in plain terms
Museumplein is the anchor, with the Rijksmuseum at one end, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk along one side, and the Concertgebouw closing the other. P.C. Hooftstraat runs off it and holds the expensive shopping. West of all that, the Vondelpark stretches for a kilometre and a half and is the city's living room in any weather. South and east you get the Apollolaan, the Beethovenstraat and the Cornelis Schuytstraat, residential, expensive, and genuinely quiet after nine in the evening.
Where the hotels are
Two clusters and a scatter. The Apollolaan corridor holds the grand addresses, set back behind lawns with car access and lobbies large enough that nobody registers anybody. The Museumplein and Vondelpark edges hold the rest, some of them townhouse conversions, some of them serious buildings with serious doormen. The scatter runs along the Stadionweg and towards the Olympic Stadium, smaller and newer.
This is the district where discretion needs the least effort. Lobbies are wide, staff are trained not to look twice, and evening traffic through the doors is steady enough that nobody counts. Your companion walks in like any other guest with somewhere to be.
Arrival times you can plan around
One hour, and it is usually met with room to spare. The tram lines from the centre run straight down the Van Baerlestraat and along the Apollolaan, and unlike the canal belt, cars work well here: streets are wide, parking exists, and there are no bridges to wait on. The only regular snag is Museumplein at the end of the afternoon, when three museums empty at once onto one square.
If you are staying on the Apollolaan or the Stadionweg, give the desk the house number. These are long streets and the difference between one end and the other is a genuine five minutes.
How an evening here tends to run
Oud-Zuid evenings are unhurried by design. A concert at the Concertgebouw finishing around ten, dinner on the Cornelis Schuytstraat or the Beethovenstraat, a nightcap in a hotel bar that has actual armchairs. In summer the Vondelpark stays busy and pleasant until dark, and a walk through it before dinner costs nothing and improves everything.

Next stops on the map
De Pijp is ten minutes east on foot. Amsterdam Centrum is a quarter of an hour by tram from Museumplein, and the Jordaan about the same going north west. Schiphol is closer from here than from anywhere else in the city, roughly twenty minutes by road outside the peak, though the airport still carries its own notice period.
